OVRDC Launches Brownfields Site Identification Survey

The Ohio Valley Regional Development Commission (OVRDC) is asking communities, property owners, businesses, and other regional stakeholders to help identify potential brownfield sites across the OVRDC region.

Brownfields are properties where the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant may complicate the redevelopment or reuse of the property. These sites can include former industrial facilities, commercial properties, gas stations, warehouses, and other properties that may be vacant, underutilized, or in need of environmental assessment before redevelopment.

OVRDC is conducting a Brownfields Site Identification Survey to build a better understanding of potentially contaminated or environmentally challenged properties throughout the region. Information collected through the survey will help OVRDC and its partners better understand regional brownfield needs and identify opportunities for future assessment, cleanup, redevelopment, and funding.

Identifying these properties is an important first step toward turning underutilized sites into productive community assets. Redevelopment of brownfield properties can support new businesses, create jobs, expand the local tax base, improve neighborhoods, and return vacant or underutilized properties to productive use.
