OVRDC Engages Students Through GIS Mapping at Western Local Schools
The Ohio Valley Regional Development Commission (OVRDC) recently participated in Western Local School District’s STEAM Career and Community Connected Learning Day, an event designed to introduce students to career pathways in science, technology, engineering, arts/agriculture, and mathematics.
Representing OVRDC were Jacob Taylor, Transportation Specialist, and Shannon Nichols, Administrative Assistant, who shared information with students about Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping and how mapping technology is used in transportation planning, infrastructure development, and community improvement projects across the region.
Students had the opportunity to learn how GIS helps communities visualize data, improve safety, and make informed decisions about roads, utilities, and economic development. As part of the presentation, students participated in an interactive mapping game where they worked to identify familiar locations on a map of Pike County, including Western Local School, the Village of Waverly, and Pike Lake. The activity gave students a hands-on look at how maps are used to understand and navigate their communities.

Through interactive discussions and activities, Jacob and Shannon highlighted how technology and mapping play an important role in shaping the future of Appalachian Ohio.
Western Local Schools’ STEAM Day continues to provide meaningful hands-on learning experiences that connect students with real-world careers and local professionals. OVRDC was proud to support the event and help inspire the next generation of problem-solvers, planners, and community leaders.
